Hey everyone Any ideas what this is? Markk took this great pic on friday night. I saved the pic from the forum and tweaked it for my monitor so I dont know how it will come out on other peoples monitors, you may have to fiddle with it. It show a green object What do you's think it is. Aaron For a larger image go to the "mars watch a success" thread.

Not sure, but I have a picture of the same region taken from Larne on Friday evening which will make an interesting comparison. I'll have a look this evening and post it here.
Clear skies,
Paul.

Interesting indeed...it may be a collection of faint stars tightly grouped together so they look fuzzy without magnification. Or...heres a crazy idea...judging by the green colour and point source and its location below M45...it just might be a head on green Taurid meteor after all the radiant is in that area and many of the Taurid memebers have been producing green meteors! The large fuzzy patch between Mars and M45 looks like the Gegenschein. Excellent image and well spotted * Has anybody cross checked the object with a star atlas yet?

Heres my picture....... The object would appear not to be there, hence it is probably a transient phoenomena of some sort - I like Martin's head-on meteor theory. Incidentally, the whole photo has a green cast to it and I suspect the "Gegenschein" is really only the background light pollution with green cast combined with the hotspot one gets with a wide aperture lens. Clear skies (tonight looks promising!) Paul.

Stunning image Paul!!! I agree with you, i think its a head on Taurid and although the other fuzzy object looks similar to the Gegenschein in size and shape (its even on the ecliptic) ..the tue Gegenschein is further west of here and to the right of mars..can anyone image it after moonset? Whats more convincing is that there are 2 radiants in that exact area belonging to the northern and southern Taurids which are both very active now!

Congratulations to Markk for his Taurid capture!
Having a good session here this evening despite mist in the air. Got a good comet search completed and spotted the Gegenschein in the east even though the waxing moon (approaching 1st 1/4) is stll up. Seen a handful of meteors. The dusk sky was glorious with the moon and blazing Venus in the south...it reminded me of a Christmas Card scene without the snow. This evening i bagged my 10th SOHO comet on the C3 images..a tiny tailless Kreutz sungrazer that appeard to the lower right of the occulting disk and making a bee line for the sun. Needless to say a Japanese guy reported first..grrr
I am heading out after moonset for a second comet search. Is anyone going to have a go at imaging the Gegenschein?
Clear skies!

I checked my other pics for anything similar and found this. Comments welcome...... Pic 1 ,,, Mars with a green object ringed. Pic 2 ... taken 11 seconds later, shows the stars shifted slightly to the right, but the green object has shifted to the left. Its not a bad pixel in the camera, as i have checked that. ? ? ?

Thats a couple of cracker images there Mark and Paul. Looks like the consensus is thats the first image is a taurid meteor. What about the other images markk took. The second green object looks very similar to the one in the first pic. Another taurid perhaps. then why is it in the same place in 2 seperate pics (11 seconds apart), surely not a taurid then?

Now this is interesting Mark..will need to have a think about this.
John...any ideas on why its on two images 11 seconds apart?
Mark what was the length of exposure on each image? and i take it you didnt see anything visually at the time?
Clicking between the two images quickly i can see its very obvious SE motion, it seems consistant in size, shape and colour in both images. Its way to slow for a typical satellite but it could be a military satellite outgassing material..these are few and far between but have been seen and imaged a few times. Myself and Conor seen one last year that was visible for 30-40 mins..they look like naked eye comets but the fact that it was not picked up on Pauls image suggests a transient phenomena of a shorter period.
The 'nucleus' of the object is slightly elongated showing its own movement . Its possible a green Taurid meteor appeared head on within the first image and left a glowing ion train/smoke trail that looked like a fuzzy coma due to our head on viewing perspective..the phenomena then drifted to the SE before the second image was taken, this is very likey as the distance travelled in the 11 secs is very short indeed. Or else you caught 2 identical meteors 11 seconds apart...what are the chances of that?
Other than these ideas..i don not know what else it could be...anyone else?

Good thinking though they are normally something like 8th mag but can be as bright as 6. Your object looks a bright naked eye object to me. I think those dont move at all?
It might be a military satellite? I have done some research into these in the past and have heard of very interesting sightings that fit the description of your object..i wonder how long it was visible for?

This is getting very interesting!! I'll look forward to someone coming up with a solution everyone agrees to. Sorry, But I have not a clue what it is!!!
