Noctilucent clouds (popularly referred to by the abbreviation "NLC") are high atmosphere cloud formations thought to be composed of small ice-coated particles; their precise nature remains a mystery. They form at very high altitudes - around 82 km above sea level - and are, thus, a quite separate phenomenon from normal weather or tropospheric cloud.

Paul how do you do that shot at night when you have nothing to line the images together as its dark. Or do you use imerge

I use iMerge. Marvellous piece of freeware! And, there's more to the image than you see as I merge the whle images and do the cropping afterwards. That enables me to use features in the town to line up on, even though I've cut them out of the final picture.
Paul.

I am well chuffed! I've been published on SW twice before but this is my first front page. The others were both in 2004 - my Perseid Meteor, frame 1 of 36 on a roll of flim, the other 35 of which were of minimal interest, and Dec 2004 when I caught the close conjunction of Jupiter and the Moon - by making a composite I got Jupiter and 5 moons - ours, and four of Jupiter's!
But this is good. And congrats to Martin and Conor getting published as well - a fab night for the EAAS.
Paul.
