Hi there, im hoping to get some advice on a telescope for my father. He has a real interest in astronomy and a few years ago we bought him his first telescope, a celestron astromaster 130. Unfortunately we've never managed to get it working properly and I don't know whether it's because we just have no idea what we're doing or whether the telescope isn't as good as it should be? Though my father would be meticulous in following instructions and we've tried looking up videos onlin etc, We've never managed to see anything like Saturn, etc.
Its his birthday in a few weeks and I was thinking of upgrading to a better scope that he is more likely to have success with, but I wondered a) whether you think we should just persevere with the scope we have and find out what we're doing wrong, or consider new lenses or b) whether I should upgrade to a better scope that will give him more of a chance of seeing more and really getting into astronomy as a pastime.
I would really appreciate any advice you could give. Kathy

Hi Kathy, and welcome to the forum.
It would be a pity to discard the telescope your father has at the moment before trying to get some use from it. Although, on the face of it, telescopes are fairly simple devices, a little bit of guidance can go a long way.
I have sent you a pm (private message) with a little more information

Hi again Kathy
I will not be able to send you a pm until your membership of the forum is confirmed. Phil has been on holiday, and is just back. He will sort this out asap.
In the meantime, and if you wish, we could make arrangements for one of us to go and see your father, and give him some advice and guidance on how to use the telescope. As you are probably aware, it does not get dark until 10.00 pm at present, and this will get later over the next few weeks.
Can you send me an email to secretary@niaas.co.uk and we can discuss this further?
