Hi Jim I am only at this a few years my self, but the scope I say is good for you would be the Sky watcher 130. This is the scope I started with you can pick up most thing with it and cheap eye piece's like galaxies and nebula. This scope new is around £160 or second hand you can pick it up for around £100, there was one sale in or buy and sell part of the web site. As for books I think the Cambridge stars altas are good and if you have a i phone try star walk. Sorry that is all I help you with. All the best and clear sky's Jimmy.

Hi Jim, If your looking for a telescope have a good read of this www.eaas.co.uk/cms/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=85:choosing-your-first-telescope&catid=5:learning-zone&Itemid=8The final recommendation is an 8'' dobsonian but the 6'' (150) is a little cheaper and will give you enough apature to get good detail in galaxies and planets. I got mine second hand and in a few weeks all those people who were inspired to by a scope after watching ''stargazing live'' but soon releized the didnt know what to luck at will by selling theirs so all ways keep an eye out on Donedeal or ebay . This one has cheap delivery. www.wexphotographic.com/buy-sky-watcher-skyliner-150-dobsonian-telescope/p10564 Turn left at Orion is a great book that will give even a beginner clear instructions on how to find 100 interesting objects like galaxies and star clusters. It's definitly worth considering a good pair of 7X50 binoculars for learning the sky and giving you good view of larger star clusters or spotting galaxies. Good luck with your new hobby.

Hi Jim
I am also from Derry and still very new to Astronomy, however, I purchased my first telescope back in March last year. It is an 8'' Skywatcher dobsonian and I couldn't recommend it enough. It is a bit big in size, but still portable, and extremely easy to use and setup.
I too looked for an Astronomy club in Derry, but I failed to find one. If you hear of any, please let me know, or if you even fancy meeting up some evening to do a bit of observing just give me a shout.
Btw, this forum is excellent and all the members are very helpful.
Tony.

Hi all. I'm new to the forum and was just wondering if anyone had thought anymore about getting an evening anywhere in or around Derry/ Londonderry. We went to Malin head recently and it was unbelievable how much could be seen without light pollution.
