There are two main types of filter in general use for viewing nebulae. These are, firstly, UHC (ultra high contrast) filters, and secondly, O111 (Oxygen 3) filters. As you may remember, you tried both on Monday night on M42, and you could see the effect, even with the bright Moon. These filters tend to darken the sky surrounding the nebula, whilst at the same time, making the nebula itself more prominent. They can really bring objects like the Veil nebula, M17, M27, M42 etc to life. I think, if I remember correctly, that both you and Geraldine thought the view of M42 in the O111 was the better of the two. Both types of filter are available in both 1.25" and 2" sizes. It is generally reckoned that Lumicon make the best filters, but, in reality, they all tend to do a good job. I would advise you to try them again on a few more objects, before making a choice. To tell you the truth, you'll probably end up with one of each. Like eyepieces, everyone has their own particular favourite. If you were to start with one, I would advise an O111 filter. Most nebulae are quite large objects, so you would need to think about what size to get. Maybe a 1.25" for your 17mm Baader would be a good start. Remember also that filters are no use for galaxies or star clusters. Some believe that they can enhance the view of planets. It is all down to what you make of them. www.astrobuysell.com/paul/filters.htmwww.firstlightoptics.com/uhc-oiii-visual-filters.html

I have a UHC filter that I bought a while back to use with a smaller telescope I used to have which I am very pleased with. Since upgrading to a larger scope I have been thinking of investing in an OIII but I am on a budget, does anybody have any experience with the skywatcher OIII? I am wondering if it is worth a punt at around £40 for the 1,25" version?

Thanks for the reply Stevie.
Most people on the forums seem quite happy with them I was just wondering if anybody from the society had any experience with them. I think at £40 I'll take a chance and order one from FLO come next payday.
