Hi all, my name's Ivan and I'm from Ballymena. I recently picked up a really cheap skylux 70/700 and have been toying with it enough to really pique my interest in astronomy in general. One of my friends talked about it enough to prompt my initial telescope purchase and I'm pretty much hooked now, so joining the forum and attending local meets seemed like a pretty good next step for me. I'm hoping to be grabbing myself a bigger aperture scope and I'm hearing pretty much good things about dobsonian mounts, so keeping my eye out for something suitable and not terribly scary. General internet searches and forum scanning have me currently checking sites for good deals on a skyliner 200p, but I have a wife I need to get on board with the spend so I'm biding my time Anyway, enough for now, best get browsing!

Hi Ivan, and welcome to the forum. An 8" dobsonian would be an excellent choice, it is generally regarded as being the ideal beginners scope to really start seeing things in the sky. It combines good views with easy portability and storage. The Skywatcher 200p is the one to go for. Here is a link www.firstlightoptics.com/dobsonians/skywatcher-skyliner-200p-dobsonian.htmlYou may be able to find one a bit cheaper than this, or even a second-hand one. You are more than welcome to come and join us at an observing session, and also to come along to our meetings. There's a few of our members in your area, so if you need directions, it will be easy to arrange.

Hi Ivan. I'm from Portrush and I try to get to as many meetings and observing sessions as I can but with shift work it's difficult to get to them all but every single one has been a great benefit. Going with much more experienced people is a must. Hope to see you soon.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm definitely going to be trying to attend meetings and observing sessions as much as possible, family commitments forgiving etc. I'm a total IT geek and am kind of wishing someone had given me the astronomy bug a bit earlier in life tbh Looking forward to it all!
