Hi all, I was actually wondering about this recently. It is often said that NLCs first appeared after the Krakatoa eruption (1883), but of course many people believe that surely they should have been visible before then. This paper, climate.arm.ac.uk/publications/noct-paper-rev.pdf by Dr. John Butler is about a possible NLC sighting from the 1850s

Thanks very much Robert for sharing that. I will read through Johns paper with extreme interest as i have also wondered about that question myself! Coincidently enough i have been spending alot of hours reading through papers/articles on the Armagh site recently. If you are interested in NEO's and impacts like me then i highly reccomend anyone to give it a read over, its fascinating reading about impacts and Tsunmai generation. I also noticed a great idea by Mark Bailey who used a CCD image of M13 to show what the Oort cloud would look like...check them out! I will check out Johns article now...thanks again Robert
