Sunset on Friday night - is there a re particular name for the band of cloud brightly illuminated from underneath? Clear skies, Paul.

paul a good image,don't know if there is a name it seems to be cloud higher up in the atmosphere and we see it as an optical illusion due to the break in the cloud lower down these are just my thoughts probably wrong anway!

Lovely image Paul. I reckon it could be sunlit Cirrus strips seen from an oblique angle!

Paul - wow, that's a cracking image!
You've got stratus undulatus there in the foresky, perhaps high stratus wwhich would make it altostratus undulatus. Again, it's hard to tell the height of the cloud, but I'd go for the former!
Perspective would make the billows appear closer together in the distance, but those billows in the sunlight portion are different...but they're at the same height and I'd guess they're the stratus undulatus again.
I think we should send it to UK Weather World for an identification!!
