As regulars here will know, I am priveliged to live by the sea. This means I can see lots of things out of my window! One such thing is Ailsa Craig. This is a huge rock in the North Channel that is over 1000 feet high and exactly 40 miles away. It marks the entrance to the Firth of Clyde. I have had the feeling for some time that sometime around the solstice the sun would rise somewhere quite close to Ailsa. This morning I found out just how right I was! The first picture shows just the tiniest piece of sunlight to the left of Ailsa. It was visible just for a few seconds before the southward movement of the Sun took it right behind the rock. Then 2 minutes later there was a second sunrise as it came up over the rock! 0440 BST 0442 BST Clear skies, Paul.

Paul, what a lovely sunrise! Ailsa Craig looks huge in that light - I don't think I've ever seen it loom so big!

Most excellent, Paul.
Side by side they're almost stereographic.
