A faint (type 2) display appeared last night from 01.45 - 03.30 BST in the NW - NE sky through sections of Lynx, S.Uma, Auriga and Taurus extending 80* in azimuth and 22* high sporting type 1 Veil and IIb bands with shadow affects. It was not very photogenic although it was nice visually. Thats my 26th NLC sighting of the season, i wonder if we could push past the 30 mark before the the season ends? Last night was the coldest night of the summer, i was actually freezing. I did a little comet hunting with the 16" (scope is in very bad shape!) and using Johns 8.5" i did an extensive search for C/2006 M3 Barnard however the cirrus clouds and strong moonlight made it hopeless. Using the scope i had a look at M31, M32, M13, Chi Cygni, M27 and M71. Was a good session.

Thanks for the report Martin. That 16" must be quite a beast, what kind of scope is it?

Hi Robert
The 16" is an F/4.5 dobsonian reflector - a Meade starfinder. I need a new rocker box made for it though and the optics aligned. But when its in a good mood its a great scope for visual observing.
Looks like another great clear night although it does look rather murky. Will have another go for Barnard tonight.
Good luck Robert

Was sitting on a beach in Sligo on this night, waiting and hoping....by half midnight, nothing. Except it was very cold indeed, I could see my breath!
