No prob Martin. I was actually inside working when the real heavy rain came outta no where. I went out the back to check things out as I knew there was a convective forecast active for here. It just looked like a large dark cloud but I knew something wasnt right. I looked over to the SW and in the very distance I could make out a small small bit of mama ' i knew the show had started! When I get out to the town and got my lucnch there was am amazing rainbow after the CB had passed. I thought nothing much more of it until we turned the car and headed back to work, i nearly passed out in my seat but couldnt give away my reactions as my co workers would think i was mad! It was a great show!

I think these might be the same formations I saw out walking yesterday afternoon from 2-4pm. Staring SW towards the setting sun just as it dropped below the cloud deck but above the horizon, and enough to underlight things. In amongst a variety of other types of cloud, and briefly after a mizzling mist, things cleared and I spotted these. Camera phone only... so the quality is poor and the compression is high enough to pixelate them... but very interesting nonetheless. What do you think? Same? Looked like big grey cotton balls, or sharply defined dangling vapour grapes.

Patrick, have you sent that second one to SW?

I hadn't thought about sending it to SW, John.
I figured the image quality wasn't sharp enough for them. (And to be fair, I wanted to bounce it off the experts here first rather than risk misnaming it.)
If you think it's worth submitting, I'm willing to consider it, though a rookie at submitting things to them (and a bit leery given some past reports of spam following prior submissions from some of our members).
edit: OK... both pics submitted.

WoooO! I hadn't noticed the new posts to this thread but boy BHC, that 2nd photo of the Mammatus is fabulous. The lighting is just perfect for the shape to stand out. Definitely the best example I have seen of mammatus in Northern Ireland.
