Hello Everyone.
Although I am new to this fourm, I'm not new to the club. My son Christopher and I have been coming along for three years or more now! so some of you will know us.
Besides astronomy we have an intrest in Amateur Radio, and have been looking at ways to combine the two hobbies. - Recently I have been looking at the Radio Jove website run by NASA. It's an interesting site and gives details of how to construct a reciever and antenna to pick up RF signals from Jupiter at around 20.1MHz. It is not known for sure what exactly it is on the planet that is producing the bursts of RF, I believe most people think it is due to variations in the planets magnetic field. Anyway you can hear these signals with the simple reciever. It can also be used to listen to solar activity on the sun when your not listening to Jupiter. So I guess you can "hear what a sun spot sounds like"
This is all very new to us and we're learning from scratch so if anyone has experience of radio astronomy set ups or the Jove project I'd like to share some info. Likewise if there is anyone interested in getting started along with us please get in touch and we can work together. Regards
Ralph
PS. can't remember the web address but just search for Radio Jove and you'll find it. It includes sound clips of what you'll hear.

Hi Ralph, Nice to see you on the forum! I was interested in Amateur Radio when I was at school in the '70s - my German teacher ran a club for us and we'd sit in on his sessions - we could listen but not transmit! He was G5AOZ I remember. As I was no good at German we had a slightly strained relationship but managed to keep the two things separate! There is a site called the Salopian Web run by a chap in Shopshire which covers the same two areas of interest - Astronomy and Amateur Radio. There is a whole page of links covering exactly the convergence of interests you're looking for - it's on the menu under "Astronomy Links". Radio Jove is in there. www.r-clarke.org.uk/I'd be most interested to hear how you get on! Clear skies, Paul.

Hi Ralph and Chris, I know one of the members of the IAA who is well into radio astro. I'll ask him if he can assist you and if you give me some contact details I'll pass it onto him, as I may not make the next meeting. You can send details via personal messages. Best regards Pook

The best source of info on this would be www.ukaranet.org.uk/ the UK Amateur Radio Astronomy Network. You may have been there already but there is a whole section with papers of information for beginners at the right side of the webpages with projects and ideas on use.
