Okay, a wee bit of scientific research so please be honest! I found out on Saturday night that Stevie's left handed, I'm also left handed and if memory serves me right, so is Neil, therefore, if you count the usual suspects at Killylane, then righthander Eamonn is outnumbered by 3:1 at each observing session. I find that quite unusual! Now, I know for a fact (a-hem) that left handers are more intelligent, musical and artistic than righthanders, so, who's left handed and who's right handed? Are the majority of astronomers (I'm being kind to myself there!!) left handed??

I'm right-handed and hold an A level in Art. And used to sell my pictures so I'm a bit artistic (allegedly). I used to play the violin many moons ago, always got at least 96% in my music exams, can play other musical instruments (and still remember how to play the violin), can read music, used to do Irish Dancing and have up to Third Level qualifications.
Should I be left-handed?!
Oh and I have an extra talent whereby I can write in mirror fashion as well as in th eright direction!

Well I am left handed, while I am pretty intelligent I have all the musical talent of a blocked nostril and the artistic ability of a brick.

In my time, I have been compared to both Yehudi Menuhin and Rembrandt. Unfortunately, I paint like Sir Yehudi, and play violin like Rembrandt!

I am right handed but I eat left handed. I always have to swap the kn ife and fork around in restaurants. I get my own back though when I set a table at home then I get to watch everone else swap.
Can also roll my tougne, used to be good at art and hate golf.

Yes, I am right handed, but I do dabble extensively in music and play guitar more than a bit. I also hate golf. And all other sport. Unless beer is involved.

I am right handed but always have the fork in my right hand - ever since i had my left arm broken when i was a kid. Have no artistic ability at all have very much of a science based approach to everything (with the exception of computer music!!). I take it people have heard of the left hand and right hand paths (from Dennis Wheatley) this seems to imply all lefties are bad and to be discouraged. Seriously though its not impossible that some of the older generation were discouraged from showing their lefthandedness. Also its maybe possible that lefties find it harder to do science using righthanded equipment & hence go into arty stuff.

I spent a lot of time with my maternal grandmother as a child, and she couldn't bear to watch me even buttering bread, because she was convinced I was about to remove a couple of fingers with the knife. She used to make comments to my father about it, but since my paternal grandmother was also a lefty, he just used to tell her to mind her own business (or words to that effect). It has never done me any harm, except for the fact that I couldn't cut or saw a straight line to save myself.

What a can of worms you opened there, Mia! It may not be directly linked to astronomy, but it's certainly provided a longed-for bit of light relief! Whilst I do have some edumacational qualifications, I'd consider myself to be of average intelligence...I never finished my degree course, probably because I couldn't revise properly as most of my lecture notes were written in mirror writing. Now that's not very intelligent, is it?!!

Another example is the position of a viewfinder - on the left hand side so you can use your right eye!

Interesting point, Kryss - it's only now that I've cottoned on that my right eye is my favoured viewing eye! I only view with my left eye if the right one's tired.

My right eye's my favoured eye as well? Does this mean I'm not actually lefthanded? (I'm sitting at my desk pretending to look through an eyepiece and if anyone walks into my office they'll think I've finally lost it!) I want an eye patch like Derek's, I find I get really bad headaches after observing, as Stevie pointed out it's called star gazing, not star staring!!!! I'm extremely left handed, quite artistic, very musical, used to knock people over with lefthand serves in volleyball and can spin a cricket ball (my father was delighted one of his offspring was a leftie so they'd be great bowler!!) I'm also the clumsiest person in the world but that's because we're living in a righthanded world! Actually, I'm not too sure which eye I use, I might use both, no, it's the left! No actually it's the right , oh , I'm going home!!
