If you are coming on Monday evening, Andy McCrea is from North down Telescopes and sells eyepieces to order.
NeilP did a talk on eyepieces at our last meeting so his article will hopefully appear on the website soon once the website is re-launched.

If you don't make it give Andy a ring. If you prefer internet shopping, try somewhere like Telescope House. Again, it depends on how much you have to spend. You can spend from £25 to £400 or so on an eyepiece. The staples are Plossls, which you can buy singly...or more economically..in sets. You'll ideally want a wide field low power, a medium, and a higher power..something like a 30mm, a 15mm and a 10mm or lower. A Barlow can double the magnifications you'll get. A decent Plossl..like the Meade 4000... will set you back £50-60, but you can get a cheap set of 6 like the Revelations for £100 or so. What sort of scope do you have?

Abbey Pharmacy, on the main road into Bangor, just before the train station, sells eyepieces, barlows and other equipment, at reasonable prices. It would be worth giving them a ring to see if they still do so. Not open on a Saturday though. I got my 12.5mm Plossl there a couple of years ago. I was telling Eamonn about it, and he said he would check it out, as he is down that way regularly.

I've just remembered you've an 8" reflector. Does it take 2" eyepieces? I'd spend a bit of money on a good low power, as it'd get extensive use..something in the 25-30mm area.

hi everyone well thanks for all the info, we are away for easter weekend so unfortunately wont be able to make it. I think ill give andy a phone, probably best method as i dont know what im doing!!! As for the size of eye pieces it takes 1.25" can these be changed to 2"? I know the best thing for me would be to try get along so i can get a better understanding of the equipment, im probably like most beginners, always rushing out at night and pointing the telescope at anything!!!! great fun!

Hey just been looking at the part where the eye pieces attach to, i notice that the part where the 1.25" eye pieces attach to is threaded into a bigger section which looks about 2.5" across, would this allow me to upgrade to 2"? if it can then id rather upgrade before buying 1.25" eye pieces

Unlikely to be a 2", but we'd need to see a photo or the object itself. If it was a 2" holder it'd look exactly like a 1.25 holder, with compression rings and a tightening knob...a thread wouldn't be there. 2" eyepiecs don't normally go below 15mm in size...you're looking at 1.25" below that. I've a 27 and a 17mm 2", everything else is 1.25"

What type of scope is it? The SCT's have a 3 inch barrel narrowing to 2 inches at the back that the eyepiece - the visual back's thread into this adaptor but you can put 2 inch ep's directly into the 3 to 2 inch back - I bought a Celestron 2 inch adaptor then discovered i didnt need it!

Think it's a Newt rather than a SCT, Kryss.

being such a novice im not really sure, what i can do is to take a pic , hopefully you might be able to identify the parts. Think its a Newtonian.
