Hi Phil,
If it's anything like my Sigma lens, there are two buttons which control manual or autofocus. If one button is manual and the other auto, you will get that buzzing sound. Make sure both buttons are on auto. On mine, there is a sliding switch at the base of the lens and then you also need to move a ring around the lens back( and forth)
Robert.

Phil Id suggest your best option would be to get an estimate for a proper repair I suspect otherwise your likely to end up with bits! How expensive was it?

Pulled it apart last night and found one of gears stripped. This jammed one of the others... quick blow with an air line and now free to turn. Taken a photo of the stripped gear and will contact sigma to see if they're nice enough to sell me a replacement. Will keep you posted.

Talked sigma into selling me the part needed and am pleased to say... we're up and running again. Cost me £6.... saved me £50!!
