Hi all, I have been using stellarium ( www.stellarium.org) on my laptop, which is fantastic! But I think it's time I had a good paper map. Been looking at that Sky Atlas 2000 that Eamonn got 2006 according to the forum. It looks rather good. I've spied a couple of examples and was wondering what the difference is between the editions and how the laminating worked out. Do I go for a cheaper 1st ed that isn't laminated or a shell out more to get a laminated 2nd? Spiral Bound or loose leaf.

Trouble is that they're very difficult to find. And when you do they're really expensive, as in about £120 or so. I tried for ages to find one, but gave up and got the loose leaf ones, which i got laminated...and I lost one at an observing session. Or perhaps Stevie used it in a roll-up.

The sky atlas 2000 is a great atlas I have the laminated one but as Eamonn says they are hard to find, they are also quite large. Recently when out observing I have been taking the 'Pocket Sky Atlas' by Sky and Telescope which is very handy it is pretty detailed and is made of a plasticky material so is water resistant, I find it great and very easy to use and fits nicely in a large pocket.
If you do go for sky atlas 2000 the laminated field version is probably best if you are regularly taking it outside.

I also have the Pocket Star Atlas, but due to the size I find it lacks context and is just a bit disjointed due to the way it is organised. The Cambridge Star Atlas is a good halfway house between the two, and also by Wil Tirion.

Thanks folks,
I think I'll fork out a bit more to get the 2nd edition. There's a first ed in uk astronomy buy and sell but a few new 2nds on ebay. Here's hoping all works well. I'll try to get it laminated sometime.

Got the SKyAtlas! It is rather big ain't it. I just need to find someone who can laminate A2 or work something else out. It's the deluxe ed so it's white background and black stars. I could see the dazzle problem in this, I'll work a way round this somehow. Maybe a coloured sheet over it.
I'm fancying a dob after christmas so this might be useful for finding my way around. Also the atlas has shown me lots of stuff to to look for. So thanks for the advice.
