Hi Folks,
I have been looking at some second hand gear online on 'Astro Buy and Sell' web site but I am a bit weary about buying. I was wondering if anyone has used 'Asto Buy and Sell' (or any others selling second hand gear) and would you recommend them?

I use Astro buy and sell for both buying an selling and have never had any problems. I really think though it all depends on who you're buying from. They do however try to weed out the undesirables and keep people being ripped off to a minimum.
The other thing I suppose is to always use paypal in case of any scams or ripoffs.

As far as I know, scams and ripoffs on Astro buy and sell are very rare. Most amateur astronomers value their reputation very highly and you would be amazed how someone can get a dodgy reputation very quickly. You could try and ask a question an amateur astronomer might know the answer to, or to find out the answer to, but most other people wouldn't. For instance, if you were buying an eyepiece, ask the seller what sort of magnification you could expect in your particular telescope. If they say something like "I don't know" or "5000 times mate" then be wary.

I'd second what Stevie and Gary had said. I've bought a few items from that website too (from a tiny filter to a massive, 10" telescope) and never had any problems; would definitely recommend this site.

Thanks for all the good advice folks, much appreciated. I have my eye on a few things that aren't too expensive think I will just go for them.

Just like some of those daft adverts for binoculars you sometimes see in the tackier Sunday papers boasting "6000 times magnification" I think they multiply the two numbers together ( 10 x 50) and multiply again by the length of the strap.
