Hi,
My friend is looking to buy a beginners scope for his granddaughter. Around £100. Something simple to handle.

hi Simon,
Thanks for the info. They seem like good value. I will run them past my friend.

You don't mention her age, but if she is quite young, she might like this
Andy McCrea actually has it advertised on his website for £35. I remember Andy brought one along to the society a couple of years ago when he was doing one of his beginner's talks, and he said then that they were a fine little instrument.

I had that little scope in mind myself but FLO don't seem to stock it. Best they do is this: www.firstlightoptics.com/reflectors/skywatcher-heritage-76-mini-dobsonian.htmlThis might be a little fiddly for a young child though and reflectors this small have next to no ability to magnify objects so it would be very small - binocular like views - of the moon and the planets would appear tiny. They would be excellent for larger open clusters though, Pleiades, Beehive and the Double Cluster to name a few. At least with the refractor they are still pick up and go, once setup, and have a decent range of magnification and views of the moon and planets will please any child, especially the moon. Still though £35 for a 76mm Dob, you couldn't beat that with a big stick... Okay you could but not advised.
