Hello I've just received a Celestron 130EQ as a Xmas present and am looking forward to using it (if the rain would stop). Does anyone have a similar scope and could offer any hints/tips? I've never looked at the stars in my life have always has an interest. Any help appreciated. Sam, Ballymoney

Hi Sam, and welcome to the forum.
Congratulations on getting your new scope, now you have a big learning curve ahead of you, especially if you have never used one before.
There's a few of our guys from up your way who, I'm sure, would be delighted to give you a hand getting started. I'll leave it to one of them to put a post on here. Don't be afraid to ask any questions you may need answered. You will find that, the more you learn, the more there is to learn.
Looking forward to hearing how you are getting on.

Hi Sam. Welcome to the forum. There are a few of us up here and while we try to get to the Society observing sessions sometimes we do our own thing and head up to Dunseverick Harbour. There are actually 4 of us. 3 in Ballymoney and me in Portrush. All 4 of us are beginners but with the guidance and help from other Society members we are getting there.
All sessions are weather dependant so I've no idea when we will be out again but I'm away for the last 3 weeks of January so we might try to get a night first week in January.
Are you on Facebook? If so look for the North West Astronomy page as we put everything there. It not a Society in its own right, I like to think of us as the North West branch of NIAAS but I created the page before we became members of NIAAS.
Hope to see you soon.
Ronny.
