Hi All,
read an article in sky@Night mag about flocking a newt. Can't find any local outlets for flocking material. Can anyone help?

Seen that article as well Derrick don't know of any local outlets, what about an arts and crafts shop maybe they might have the same sort of material used for flocking a newt.
Regards Jonathan

Hi Stevie & Simon
Thanks Stevie. Will look it up.
Simon, the article will explain it better than me, but even though the interior of a newt. is painted black stray light still has an effect on contrast.

Hi Stevie, Found the web site as product shown in article in Sky@Night mag. Wilko.com £5 per sheet (3 sheets ) + £3 PP. Total £18. Will attempt this when material arrives.
A wee bit better.
Thanks
Derrick

Sorry Derrick, I didn't even look at the price, and that delivery charge is scandalous.

First Light Optics (online) seems to be the best bet at around £7 per roll.
What is the consensus from people with the effectiveness of flocking? I'm not sure it gives a big benefit if you have a dark environment to observe from?
I had thought about flocking the 300p but cannot be bothered taking the whole scope apart again after I gave it all a good cleaning shortly after aquiring it! It would be a fair old task to do a 12" scope I think for maybe < 5% improvement (if anything at all)? I had thought about getting an AstroZap dew shield for it instead so that I get flocking benefits at the front of the OTA along with dew prevention for the secondary?

Like many other things in amateur astronomy, like whether to upgrade diagonals, or buy coloured filters, some people think it is a great idea, and others think it is a waste of time.
I have personally never flocked a dob, and I don't know anyone who has, but many people on other forums swear it makes a huge difference.
I would be really curious as to how it works out for Derrick, as he already has one of the best dobs in the society.

Yes, I think mileage varies for people depending on what the scope is already painted with, how dark their site is, and perhaps a few other factors such as stray light from neighbours, etc.
Lol, I actually cover my head with a black towel when I'm observing DSO's and want as much contrast as possible. The neighbours would probably think I'm mad! I also use TeleVue Delos eyepieces which give great contrast.
