Quite an impressive aurora over the north coast last night, best around 9pm, despite the obligatory cloud hugging the northern horizon. Had the basic kinda whitey glow, with occasional waves of ethereal green spikes and columns.

I must be the only human alive that hasn't seen any aurora yet. I never knew there was any activity last night but had a gaze at the stars and saw nothing of the sort.

Easier said than done, unless your a BBC presenter who gets to travel all over the world just to demonstrate how throwing a stone in water makes ripples.

Simon if you're on Facebook follow my page North Coast Aurora Watch. Shameless plug although I update it almost daily! As a result of this page I've seen every aurora since I started the page!

Thanks for the offer Ronny though I am not on Facebook. I do have an Aurora app that I paid for with live data and alerts but the alerts have never worked.

I kept looking out between 20:00 and up until 12:00 but the best I saw was a very faint thin line of a vaguely greenish tinted cloud like structure that kept fading away and coming back. With it being the first time I saw any kind of aurora it was very disappointing.

The colour really comes through in photos. Even from my house, very bad light pollution - got a couple of good pics of a green auroral arc. Visually the arc was there, but more a greyish shade.

It became very clear that this was just a photogenic display. I will plan a holiday to Iceland in the next few years and see them for real and proper.

Amber alert for Aurora, IMF is well to the South and the edge of the Oval is over Scotland.

Hey guys!
anyone have any recommendations for the ideal place? like the exact place?
I know up north coast, but any postcode recommendations for the best view?
my app told me it was amber the other night, Neil!
was tempted to travel up to get shoots but not knowing an exact area is the stopper here!

Hi Karl
Many of the best images of the aurora are taken in the area around Dunluce castle. But, anywhere along the cost from there down to white Park bay is very good.
We were at Ballintoy Harbour a while ago and got a lovely view, but we did have the advantage that the the lights had been put out for us.
If you don't want to travel that far, another good spot is on the Coast Road, about a mile past the Halfway House. There is a car park on the right side of the road (the sea side). The wife and I saw an excellent aurora from there a few weeks ago. I've often thought this would be a good place for observing, although, because it is pretty dark, drivers tend to drive with their full beam headlights on.
There is also a car park on the hill above Carncastle, on the Feystown Road.
